I guess I need to vent a little here, especially since I am a trusting sort and try to not get backstabbed....
Over a year ago, I set up a commission with an artist on this site. Since this was my first commission, I really didn't know the ins and outs of a transaction like that.
Well, mistake number one was paying up front. At first the artist was pretty gung ho about the commission, and even provided a couple of very rough sketches of what I wanted. But after that, months passed when I'd try and get an update and would get nothing but silence in return. Occasionally, he'd say he'd have an update...but ended up sending nothing in the end. I even politely asked for a 'rough' idea how long the commission would take, but, again, all I got was silence.
Finally, after close to 7 months of nothing but silence, with only two rough sketches to show for it, I got sick of waiting so I asked for the commission to be terminated and for getting a refund. He was initially apologetic about the whole affair and said he'd refund the money as soon as he could.
Well, here we are close to 4 months since then and STILL no refund. I try and not let my emotions get the better of me, but I don't like being had.
The artist said he was unemployed and going through some bad times. But if that were true, why wait months before saying anything?
When I kept asking how long before he could refund the money, all he said was 'I don't know.' Again, when I asked for a timeframe, he wouldn't give me an answer.
So now, my first and (so far) only commission has really left a bad taste in my mouth.
If nothing else, it's taught me to be a little more careful with whom to deal with in terms of commissions.
The person says he'll refund my money, but after over a year when I first opened the commission, I really don't know now.
Live and learn.
